Lines and Wrinkles

By the age of 30 most people will start to show the signs of fine lines and wrinkles. As we continue to age they will become permanent as the skin loses its firmness, elasticity and structure. This occurs mainly because of loss of collagen and elastin fibres, as well as a reduction in volume of the skins ground substance, such as Hyaluronic acid.

Dry, Dull or Flaking Skin

Dry skin can be due to genetic factors or environmental conditions, and is very common. It is generally caused by an impaired skin barrier function, resulting in increased water loss in the outer layers of the skin.

Scarring / Stretch Marks

Scarring is the body’s natural healing response after an injury and is permanent. Various factors will influence how your skin will scar. The location, depth and size of the original injury will impact on the scar’s characteristics and age, heredity, gender and ethnicity, will also affect how your skin will react. There are several different types of scar tissue and therefore a variety of treatments are used to improve their size, colour and texture with varying degrees of overall improvement.

Stretch marks are a form of scarring, which occur when the skin is stretched creating tears in the deeper layers of skin.

Extrinsic Aging / Sun-Damage

Research shows that there are two types of aging. Aging caused by the genes we inherit is called intrinsic or internal ageing. The other type of ageing is known as extrinsic or external ageing and is caused by environmental factors, such as sun exposure.

A number of extrinsic or external factors often act together with the normal ageing process to prematurely age our skin and is mainly caused by the sun. Other external factors include repetitive facial expressions, gravity, sleeping positions, and smoking.

A few minutes of unprotected sun exposure every day over time can cause noticeable changes and damage to the skin. Freckles, age spots, damaged capillaries, rough and leathery skin, wrinkles, loose skin, and a blotchy complexion along with skin cancers can be a result.

The exception is Post Inflammatory Hyper-Pigmentation (PIHP), which is the skins response to an injury other than ultraviolet radiation and is common in darker skin types.

Acne / Pimples / Blackheads

Acne is a complex and misunderstood disorder involving the pilosebaceous unit (hair follicle & oil glands). It is extremely common in teenagers though it is also found in adults. It usually consists of varying degrees of comedones (blackheads), papules (non pustular lumps), pustules (whiteheads) and sometimes nodules or cysts.

Due to these acne lesions varying so much individually and between person to person it is difficult to isolate the basic cause, though there are three principal factors that have been identified.

These factors work interdependently and are influenced by heredity and hormonal activity. In all cases early treatment is essential for the best possible
outcome.

Rosacea normally begins with bouts of facial flushing usually around the nose, cheeks, forehead and chin either with or without the presence of telangiectasia and/or inflammatory acne lesions.

Flushing generally increases due to aggravating factors such as extreme temperatures, hot and spicy foods, alcohol and stress. People suffering with this condition should see a physician for an accurate diagnosis and complete treatment.
